As millions of Americans take to the roads for holiday travel, many feel that driving has become more dangerous since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A recent Pew Research Center survey reveals that nearly half of Americans believe drivers in their area are less safe today than five years ago. Participants identified cellphone distraction as the most significant issue, with almost four out of five labeling it a major concern.
Additionally, respondents report witnessing road rage and aggressive driving behaviors frequently. Although the spike in pandemic-era vehicle fatalities has decreased, unsafe driving remains a pressing issue.
The survey says…
Since the pandemic, many Americans have reported notable changes in driving habits. Here are the six most concerning behaviors ranked by the over 5,000 people taking part in the survey:
- Cellphone usage: 78%
- Aggressive driving: 63%
- Speeding: 63%
- Drunk driving: 51%
- Injuries to pedestrians and cyclists: 47%
- Drugged driving (mainly marijuana): 37%
These findings highlight the need for increased awareness and action to improve road safety.
Distracted driving accidents continue to rise
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics reveal a substantial increase in distracted driving crashes over the past two decades, much of which is attributed to smartphone usage.
The three main forms of distracted driving are:
- Visual: Taking your eyes off the road. Examples include looking at a GPS device, reading a text message or glancing at a billboard.
- Manual: Removing your hands from the wheel. Examples include eating, adjusting the radio or reaching for items in the car.
- Cognitive: Taking your mind off driving. Examples include daydreaming, engaging in a heated conversation or being preoccupied with personal problems.
Each type of distraction poses serious risks, emphasizing the importance of remaining focused and attentive while driving.
What about road rage?
Hostile drivers remain a significant concern with survey participants, with 27% saying they witness this extreme behavior often. Urban residents, in particular, report higher instances of road rage.
Victims of road rage incidents or accidents caused by someone’s dangerous behavior may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and emotional distress. A skilled car accident lawyer can help ensure you receive justice and the maximum compensation you deserve.
